I can’t have been alone in being inspired by Idris Elba’s powerful speech to Parliament this week calling for greater diversity in film and TV.
Not only is he a fantastic actor wearing a beautiful suit – but he can write a pretty good speech too.
His words about the plentiful supply of talent compared to the pitiful availability of opportunity struck a huge cord with me.
“If you want to safeguard the economy, you have to safeguard the Creative Industries; and they rely on TALENT. Talent is our lifeblood – we can’t afford to WASTE it, or give it away. But when you don’t reflect the real world, too much talent is trashed. Talent is everywhere, opportunity isn’t. And talent can’t reach opportunity.”
That’s exactly what I see all around. Amazing young people trapped by their circumstances. I am inspired by the young people I have met at the Elmgreen School and what they could achieve given the support and connections.
Our job, at Raw Talent, in the collaboration we want to build with businesses and educators and across our community, is to help talent reach opportunity.
